My interests in stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination examine the ways in which people attempt to both rationalize and reduce their biases. My students and I explore issues related to group-based privilege in the context of race and gender (e.g., how do “well-intentioned egalitarians” manage privileged identities?). I also maintain a strong interest in the ways in which interpersonal confrontation can be an effective way to reduce bias as well as how “positive stereotypes” (e.g., Black people are naturally athletic, Native Americans have profound connection to nature) may have subtle but insidious effects on the perpetuation of bias.
