Foundational Publications

The Center is the founding home of two periodicals — the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology and the Online Readings in Psychology and Culture.

Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology (JCCP)

  • 1969: the new Center surveyed about 200 psychologists around the world,  all of whom showed an interest in culture within their work.  With few exceptions, they endorsed the idea of  starting a journal that focused  entirely on culture. Thus, assured of global interest, Center co-founder Dr. Walt Lonner assumed the role of founding editor of the JCCP.
  • 1970: The JCCP was launched, and the first copyrighted journal in the field of Psychology that exclusively featured “culture” in its title.  In its first three years, the JCCP was published in Bellingham, Washington, primarily on the campus of (then) Western Washington State College.
  • 1972: The JCCP joined hands with the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP)
  • 1973: Sage Publications became the JCCP publisher, with Western Washington University continuing its ownership.
  • 2004: Sage purchased the copyright from WWU, creating a contract between Sage and the Center and the IACCP to share royalties. These funds have supported many Center activities since that time.
  • Dr. Lonner has served on the editorial board of the JCCP since the beginning and was followed by eight Editors- in-Chief. The current Editor-in- Chief is Dr. Sylvia Xiaohua Chen of Hong Kong Polytechnic University. For more than half a century, its editorial board has consisted of around 300 scholars from more than forty countries.

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture (ORPC)

The ORPC is an open access, free collection of original and relatively short articles written by culture-oriented scholars from around the world. Conceived in 2001 by Dr. Lonner and assisted by three Center associates, it has become popular across the globe as a free teaching aid. A few years after its inauguration, the Center transferred ownership to the IACCP.  The current editor of the ORPC is Dr. Michael Bender of Tilburg University, The Netherlands. Its five associate editors are from five different countries and help to support the ever-expanding archive.

The editing and administration of these two publications are the responsibility of the Publications and Communication Committee of the IACCP.  For further information see IACCP.org.
