About

My research intervenes in demography and global sociology by showing that the motivations, desires, and behaviors of women in the Global South are multi-dimensional and context dependent. Applying demographic methods such as parity progression and survival analysis to available survey data, my research illustrates the importance of integrating critical theory into quantitative research to strengthen regionally based and empirically grounded demographic research. My current research projects expand on this body of work as I continue to explore ways to expand critical demography through mixed-methods research on South Asian women’s status and shifting gender dynamics over the life course. A particular method I am interested in interested in utilizing is vignettes to study cultural schemas on gender roles across contexts that vary in the degree to which they prefer sons over daughters.
